Dr. Do Thi Thu Hien, a researcher from the Research Center for Infectious Diseases at International University – Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, will be joining the USAID Partnership for Higher Education Reform project’s Visiting Scholar Program (VSP) in the United States from August to October 2024.
During her term at the University of California, Irvine, Dr. Hien will delve into pioneering research aimed at understanding and combating breast cancer. She will explore the molecular signaling pathways that regulate the proliferation, migration, invasion, and metastasis of breast cancer cells. This research seeks to identify key mechanisms that drive cancer progression, informing the development of targeted therapies. Dr. Hien’s research has the potential to contribute to the development of effective treatments that can mitigate metastatic spread and improve patient outcomes in breast cancer.
Beyond her research, Dr. Hien will actively engage in the vibrant academic environment at the University of California, Irvine. She plans to attend seminars, workshops, and conferences pertinent to her research areas, staying updated on the latest scientific advancements and fostering professional networks. Additionally, she will participate in specialized training sessions and skill-building workshops offered by the University of California, Irvine to improve her research skills. These opportunities will enhance her technical expertise and methodological approaches, empowering her to conduct high-impact research.
After completing her program, Dr. Hien will return to Vietnam, bringing with her a wealth of knowledge and experience. She will contribute to elevating the research profile of her home university, fostering academic excellence and innovation. Dr. Hien plans to share her learning and insights with fellow scholars through seminars, workshops, and collaborative projects, inspiring the next generation of researchers.

The Visiting Scholar Program (VSP) under the USAID Partnership for Higher Education Reform project supports scholars from (1) Vietnam National University, (2) the University of Danang, and (3) Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City. The goal is to improve the research and teaching capacity of scholars across Vietnam while expanding partnerships with higher education institutions in the United States. In the Summer and Fall of 2024, the VSP will send a total of 21 scholars from Vietnam’s three major public university systems to host institutions in the United States for academic research and exchange experiences.
