Abstract:
Materials science is considered the backbone of modern technologies. Materials are key components in many electronic devices, whose applications range from electric transformers to computer hard-disk drives, mobile phones, sensors, motors, generators, refrigerators, medical devices, and home appliances. The majority of the research on materials focuses on the engineering of physical, chemical, and mechanical properties and the discovery of new materials with desirable characteristics for use in next generation devices. In this lecture, I will highlight recent breakthrough findings and discoveries in materials science and nanotechnology, discuss emerging opportunities and challenges in the field, and propose some AI and machine learning-driven strategies for future research.
